Students at 3–4 often see the biggest jumps. They usually have specific gaps — a shaky understanding of forces, confusion between velocity and acceleration, weak algebra underneath the physics — not a general inability. Once those gaps are found and patched, progress is rapid.

Here's the number that changes everything: the 7 boundary in IB Physics HL is approximately 68%. That means a third of the exam can go wrong and you still get the top grade. The IB doesn't use a bell curve — grade boundaries are set by descriptors, not percentiles, which means in theory every student in the room could score a 7 if they all cross 68%. Your child isn't competing against other students. They're competing against a threshold. And that threshold is beatable. I've seen students move from 3 to 6 in ten weeks and from 4 to 7 in eight.
Cambridge Engineering: IB 41–42, HL 776 with a 7 in Physics, plus the ESAT admissions test. Oxford Physics: IB 39, HL 766 — the 7 must be in Physics or Maths, plus the PAT. Oxford shortlists roughly 2.5 per place for interview out of 8–10 applicants. Imperial: IB 38–40, Physics HL 6–7, plus ESAT. MIT/Ivy League: Typically 40–42 total with 7s in HL STEM subjects. A Physics 6 instead of 7 can be the difference between an offer and a rejection.
Yes — and this is one of the highest-impact things we can do. The IA is worth 20% of your final grade at HL (25% at SL) — and most students leave marks here. Conclusion and Evaluation alone accounts for half the IA marks, yet it's the section most students rush through in the last hour. I help students choose research questions that maximise scoring potential, structure reports to hit every IB criterion, and avoid the structural mistakes that typically cost 5–8 marks. Fixing the IA can move your final grade by a full level before you even sit the exam.

Yes. SL students often underestimate the exam because it's "Standard Level" — but the 7 boundary for SL is approximately 65% — only three percentage points below HL. And only 10% of SL students achieve a 7 (compared to 22% at HL). The strategic approach — command terms, exam technique, IA optimisation — works identically for both levels.
For engineering at Cambridge, Imperial, or ETH Zurich, Physics HL 7 is effectively non-negotiable. For computer science at Oxford or Cambridge, strong Physics demonstrates the analytical reasoning admissions teams look for. For medicine, IB Physics strengthens any application — schools like UCL, Edinburgh, and Karolinska value it even when it's not a formal prerequisite.

The stakes go beyond admissions. Only 22% of HL students achieve a 7 — my students beat those odds. Physics is the hard signal on a university application. A strong grade tells admissions committees your child can handle rigorous quantitative thinking.
Significantly. There are now only two external papers instead of three. Optional topics have been absorbed into the core. Paper 1 includes data-based questions (Part B) testing graphing, uncertainties, and experimental analysis — skills many schools haven't adjusted for. Paper 2 extended-response questions deliberately cross themes. No marks are deducted for wrong MCQ answers (Paper 1A), and you get 2 minutes per question instead of 1.5.

The syllabus has been examined since May 2025, so there are real past papers to work from rather than specimen guesses, and more of them than any cohort before you had. Anyone sitting from now on is the first group who can prepare against a genuine pattern rather than a guess — provided someone has actually studied it.

You don't need to be perfect. You need to be strategic.

The current syllabus has been examined twice — May 2025 and May 2026 — and those two papers are the only real data anyone has. I have been through both, line by line. Paper 2 extended-response questions deliberately cross multiple themes — a question might combine mechanics, energy, and fields. Students who studied each topic in isolation get blindsided. Most tutors are still teaching from the old three-paper format.

The IB uses specific command terms — "explain," "deduce," "discuss" — and each one demands a structurally different answer. Most students lose 2–4 marks per paper simply because they write an "explain" answer when the question says "describe."

Paper 1A multiple choice now gives you 2 minutes per question instead of 1.5, and there's no penalty for wrong answers. That's free marks if you know how to eliminate options systematically — and wasted marks if you don't.
